Scientific discovery revolutionizes breathing

Dr Buteyko discovered a revolutionary secret to breathing better. Although of course nose breathing techniques are not news (yoga, qi gong, etc.) Dr. Buteyko proved them to be true scientifically. His research provides a starting point for explaining why we can improve the ventilatory respiratory quotient of the lungs. While people are beginning to realize the power the breath has to restore health and vitality, the surface of what’s possible has only just been scratched, here’s my response to a recent article by Dr. Mercola (view link).

DSC01527Until we identify exactly what pattern of breathing and movement supplies all tissues evenly with just the right amount of oxygen regardless of exercise speed, intensity, or duration, we miss the mark. We either hypo-ventilate producing an alkalotic state that wastes energy because oxygen supply exceeds demand, such as  breathing faster while sitting still. Or if we’re moving faster than we’re breathing hyperventilation kicks in to catch up (demand exceeds supply). All that huffing and puffing during exercise is commonly thought of as overbreathing, however the opposite is actually happening, a lack of oxygen is making blood pH acidic, that’s why you’re hyperventilating. Hyperventilation itself isn’t a bad thing, it’s critical as a default survival mechanism during exercise, that when suppressed, can cause more harm than good.

Yes the drop in CO2 and pH levels does have a depressive effect on the neural and immune systems. As long as you exhale completely, nose breathing does help the lungs to absorb oxygen, and breath holding does help create a high altitude training effect that conditions lung capacity over time, but this isn’t nearly enough to potentiate the anaerobic threshold in real time during a workout. At a certain point of intensity the hyperventilation in and out through the mouth will take in more oxygen then trying to inhale through the nose if you can even suppress your natural impulse. Before the need to hyperventilate can be rendered null and void, the mechanics of exercise must be precisely engineered to continually normalize 02/ C02 ratios at the juncture of the lungs as well as in the tissues.

Several factors aren’t currently being considered regarding equitable distribution of blood to organs, glands and tissues, including pressure changes in the chest and abdomen which fractionalize the ventilation/ perfusion ratio of the three lung segments. A dynamic synergy between speed of breath, duration of breath holding, lung position relative to gravity, direction of movement, rhythm and centrifugal force, sequencing of large and small muscle groups, V02max requirements and much more is necessary to coordinate the whole spectrum of anatomic physiologic mechanisms. That’s what it takes to effectively balance chemical changes that cause hypoventilation and hyperventilation under all circumstances. You can exercise upside down in every possible position till you’re blue in the face but it won’t make a wit of difference if you haven’t understood the complete parameters of the body’s physiological need to maintain pH balance under all circumstances. And of course simply incorporating Buteyko nose breathing alone won’t optimize gas exchange with the precision necessary to achieve true homeostasis during exercise once you really get going.

Some of more important physiological stressors (cortisol, overheating, build up of metabolites, etc.) which Dr. Buteyko didn’t resolve are the variable imbalances that occur at different degrees of exercise intensity. His technique is unable to account for the required compression in terms of time, nor the specificity of hormonal and neural stimulation that facilitates circulation to bones and deep tissues in equal measure with large working muscles (which otherwise hog all the blood). You know the pre-requisite homeostatic balance for optimal cellular metabolism is being maintained when you have no urge to hyperventilate even when the body is at  maximum training heart rate. This is pHx™.

Take for example, the BreatheEasy which is performed between most of the 24 exercises in the pH fitness series. To maintain the acid-alkaline balance achieved by each set of repetitions during the routine, one of the things we do during the routine is inhale through the nose to the count of six and exhale thru the mouth to the count of six, with an additional three counts added at end-inspiration and end-expiration to facilitate deeper breathing and stimulate the upper respiratory tract. However this specific breathing pattern would have almost zero benefit if it wasn’t for the precise corresponding movement which complements it.

The specialized pHx warm-up cool down workout eclipses rudimentary techniques to surpass the typical benefits of any kind of exercise by ensuring that all organ systems remain fully balanced at all degrees of performance intensity. To achieve this the breathing-specific and movement-specific sequence uses the fastest way to neutralize pH acidity and raise the anaerobic threshold. It goes far beyond what was previously achieved with Buteyko style techniques, to match the body’s need for oxygen exactly. The advantage here is that by utilizing complete range of sequence-specific functional movement through range of motion (repetitive restricted range even with the core engaged can cause injury) it’s now possible to balance V02max equally in all muscles without draining the deep organs, and within minutes prior to sports training. Because the pHx technique also builds unprecedented oxygen reserves in deep organs permitting longer hours of concentration, it truly does prevent cognitive decline. The remarkable routine integrates the different parts of the body as a cohesive coordinated unit, it’s the complete expression of body and mind under the integrating conditions of pH balance with the least time and effort. Naturally efficiency yields the best result.

How breathing engages the core

Featured

vitruvian-man-largeTransverse diaphragms connected with the sacral, lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine need to move freely if electrolytes are to flow uninterrupted up thru the organ systems. Since the diaphragm between the chest and abdomen moves the most, gaining control over ventilatory depth and breadth is the most efficient way to engage the deepest layers of muscle connected to the spine. Whether it’s Yoga, Pilates, or martial arts, all exercise disciplines have their own way of achieving  this, each slightly different depending on their priority. For example in Pilates postural correction thru strengthening and conditioning the core muscles requires a specific explanation of the breathing technique, while in the pHx™ warmup cool down routine the purpose is oxygenating deep organs and muscles equally in the sequence that balances body pH. If you haven’t heard about pHx, it’s performance  pre and post sports training, or any stressful activity, assists the kidneys in normalizing blood pH necessary for integrating physiological processes. The Body”Fit pHx routine is essentially a breathing exercise that utilizes the most economical complete expression of the musculo-skeletal system in a single 7-14 minute session that raises V02max specifically in each muscle group to elicit an entirely revolutionary physiological response aimed at accelerating mind body focus. That is, it prevents acidification of the blood during physical activity by distributing electrolytes evenly to all cells. Therefore pHx requires a more efficient breathing technique.

Transverse abdominis, the muscle that circumvents the abdomen and pops up in your lower belly whenever you cough, is what keeps the  low back in the correct neutral position to stabilize rotation of the torso around the pelvis. It’s most easily activated when we focus in on a very specific point in the belly, which we call the CorePoint™ in pHx. The breathing technique used in pHx to increase movement of the five transverse diaphragms utilizes this primary visualization. The CorePoint is not an anatomical organ like the kidneys, it’s our physical centre of balance located in the middle of the lower abdomen. This is where most of the blood in the body is stored during rest and sleep..

The pelvic diaphragm is felt in the pit of the lower belly just above the pubic bone. If you think of the pelvic diaphragm as the bottom of a bowl, the CorePoint is suspended above it about three fingerwidths below the navel. By visualizing the CorePoint as a magnet that attracts the abdominal diaphragm downwards and the pelvic diaphragm upwards in the vacuum created by expansion of the pulmonary cavity during inspiration, we can sense our whole body at once, coordinating movement and breathing more effectively.

CorePoint breathing also helps improves core conditioning crucial to muscle strength. When we imagine drawing air directly into this point, as opposed to trying to figure out which muscles to activate the core (squeezing in the stomach like corset or a tight belt around your torso, etc) the bottom ribs expand more fully. So pHx isn’t the belly breathing of yoga. The difference is that by end inspiration when air has filled the top lung segment, this depth and breadth of expansion produces pressure changes between the chest and abdomen that naturally pulls up on the deep pelvic core  including the pelvic floor (since all the muscles are connected). It takes Pilates breathing to the next level by becoming aware of all the muscles of the body at the same time, the intelligence of the body engages breathing depth and breath with an efficiency that cannot be duplicated by the mind.

Try it, focus in on the CorePoint, inhale deeply letting the belly expand naturally (don’t worry this isn’t what gives you a pot belly) and notice how contraction peaks first in the abdominal diaphragm, followed by diaphragms related to the chest, neck and head, until finally at the top of the inhale, the pelvic diaphragm is awakened and the pelvic core contracts. When exhaling maintain the CorePoint releases the diaphragm upwards as you press air out of the lungs thru the mouth in the reverse order from top to bottom. This produces quite a different dynamic from Pilates or yoga, without holding in the stomach, squeezing the sphincters to pull up the pelvic floor, contracting the gluts or anything like that. In fact during pHx you shouldn’t attempt to engage the core by using the more superficial muscles as it can restrict breathing.

The ventilatory efficiency that triggers a flash of electrolytes thru all the tissues during pHx depends on the unique breathing pattern for each progressive exercise, however how freely and quickly the chest moves is primarily determined by consistency of visualization. Think of your upper and lower abdomen as an accordion pressing towards the CorePoint on the inhale and opening inward on the exhale, with your lungs doing the pumping action. As you fill your lungs to the top the pressures in the chest and abdomen become such that you can actually feel the CorePoint pulling up all the muscles of the lower abdomen (including the Kegel muscles).

In this way the pelvic transverse diaphragm also follows the breath and is ready to fully contract on the exhale as the CorePoint magnet releases the tissues, and contraction of the pelvic core kicks in fully to stabilize the spine. Believe it or not, but the fact remains mental focus on the precise CorePoint of physical equilibrium, supports the dynamic synergy where all muscles are activated inside following the breath. Unless we pinpoint the CorePoint and fill the lungs from bottom to top and empty in the reverse order, we don’t get the same intensification in the pelvic core during inspiration and we won’t get the same depth of contraction with expiration. No other visualization will do it quite like this.

You can then add the correct posture by dropping shoulders out, back, and down towards the CorePoint, relaxing your feet, unlocking the knees to let your weight sink, tilting the pelvis for a neutral spine, and rucking the hips till you feel a slight curl at the level of the diaphragm in the lower belly and you have an effective two-way stretch from the CorePoint thru the top of your head that activates multifidus and the transverse abdominals, et Voila you’ve engaged your core effortlessly. What it comes down to breathing specific to what we’re trying to achieve with an exercise workout gives better results.

[ Best Exercise Fit ] Not Just Monkey Business

It turns out that it’s a lot easier to peel a banana if you start from the ‘wrong’ end. You don’t even have to use your teeth.

Here’s the thing: Seth Godin knows this. Now I’ve tried it too. And, it’s true.

When it comes to fitness it’s the same. It’s easier to fit exercise in when it fits the body. Now I’ve tried that too. And, it’s true.

[ Busy Women ] Entrepreneurs: How to Fail-proof Fitness to Fit in

“Discover the four cardinal rules for fitting in fitness. And why if even one of the four cardinal rules is missing our best intentions will fail.”

I remember a few years back when we first coined the term ..’because it fits’. Within weeks everyone from car dealers to property developers picked up on it and started using it as a marketing ploy to sell the perception that what they offered was your perfect fit. But what does it really mean to achieve a true body fit, and why does it matter anyway?

To go beyond the limiting beliefs we inevitably absorb, a reliable process is needed for objective clear thought to emerge. I’ve found the symmetry of our physical foundation provides a crucial point of reference for logical analysis, if it’s to have the scope to match reality as it is. Case in point: our musculo-skeletal system gives us an understanding of structure. It cooresponds to that component of our mental landscape related to stability – our ability to get ‘down to the bone’ to the root of things.

I recently had the opportunity to observe this first hand when I had my two front teeth restored and repaired. When the dentist originally worked on them, she didn’t leave enough space for them to move comfortably with changes in muscular tension throughout the day. This resulted in pressure on my skull and even threw out the symmetry of my spine slightly, leading to a generalized weakness and pain which I suddenly began experiencing.  What was perhaps even more disconcerting was the headache I would get when I tried to think.

It was an eye opener to observe directly how the movement of my teeth affected the alignment of my whole skeletal structure. And how closely the mind follows the pre-established pattern of the body. We’re made with absolute perfection aren’t we? It reminded me to never take for granted the precision with which our body and mind fit seamlessly together. I’ll never regret the years I’ve spent perfecting a system of exercise that moulds the body into its own pattern in a few minutes a day. Little did I guess that it would not only give me a keen self awareness, it was this very same program which also fortified my ‘will to do’ to communicate with the doctor exactly what I needed.

… enter your name and email Here » if all you want for Xmas is everything your two front teeth signify, aka, how to fail-proof fitness to fit in. After all isn’t that really what it comes down to?

[ Busy Women ] & pHx, trick or treat?

When asked why she joined my new group Busy Women Entrepreneurs on LinkedIn, one woman said she liked the nature of the group, “AND I’m a 30+ year entrepreneur – not 30 years old!!!!!!!!!!” I thought this fit well with another woman’s query (who is in her 30’s) who asked, I’ve just looked at your website and it sounds interesting, how is pHx™ different from other workout regimens?

The answer is in the question… pHx is not just another workout regimen that repeats, reuses and repackages a little bit of this and a little bit of that and presents it as the latest cocktail of something you’ve done before. It’s an entirely new exercise modality, at par with the discovery of yoga, Pilates, or martial arts, that encompass all previous knowledge to go beyond anything you’ve experienced before. Yes there is something new under the sun, and it’s a treat not a trick.

pHx changes everything and that becomes obvious the very first time you do it. I do it everyday, its how I’ve stayed fit all these years even when I was too busy to go to the gym. Now whenever I do go for a game of squash, some weight lifting or a Pilates class, I always do a 7-minute round of pHx as my warm-up and then again as my cool down. It totally revives me and prevents any soreness I’d otherwise experience from sports and exercise.

I could go on and on because I’m passionate about getting the word out and having others experience the advantages of pHx. Bye the way, it’s all in the Body’Fit Life website, we built it to give you all the information, training and support you’ll need to make pHx a part of your life. China’s Olympic Gold Lead Secret?

It’s no accident that China is leading the Gold metal win early in the 2012 London Olympic Games this week. Their rise to the upper echelons of Olympic glory is no surprise to those of us who know that the Chinese have chosen not to go with the same old, same old. They lead in the last summer Olympics too, and it’s not only because they have a much larger demographic; they’ve prepared their athletes to win, they’ve looked beyond how they’ve trained in the past.

When I shared my 100% aerobic crossfit shortcut with the unassuming young man from China years ago, we had no idea what influence he would have. We had become friends and when we invited him over for dinner, he brought a gift, a valuable work of traditional Chinese art. In retrospect, as the son of a high ranking official in China it comes as no surprise that eventually they’d be lead to the gold he had procured by his interest in our work during his time in Canada.

Of course it doesn’t hurt that we contacted thousands of sports and health fitness venues in China, as well as the States and around the globe, since then. It only goes to show that the truly leading discoveries are usually found in the most unlikely places. But only if your will-to-win is strong enough to overcome the status quo. Conventional concepts of athletic training have been well engrained in the West, and any radical paradigm presents a challenge that can be met with resistance. C’est la vie, that foreign feeling of defeat is the price to pay for the openness to wake up and smell the roses on the podium.

A Shift in Paradigm Paradox

It’s funny isn’t it, how we’ve been so quick to accept the status quo even though we know it’s not working, and yet so reticent to champion change even if more reasonable. This puzzling phenomena of defaulting to the lowest common denominator and adamant opposition to anything else (even though we might choose differently if we really thought it through) has a commonality that points to the cause, doesn’t it. Thought, or rather the lack of comprehensive thought.

Disconnected fragmented logic produces an odd resistance, for example we go to great lengths to handle passive aggressive vagrants and petty criminals with kid gloves (permitting possession of stolen property, trespassing, disturbance of the peace), and yet we’ve been loathe to extend respect to peaceful demonstrators with a higher aim in life. Even if it’s meant sacrificing our own democratic rights and freedoms, and sometimes to the point of tolerating police brutality. Could this be why as a society we’ve paradoxically defended environmental pollution, treated our own bodies as toxic dumps, criticized those who regard the truth as constructive and praised the harbingers of lies and deception?

Acting on engrained beliefs short circuits the cycle of a complete thought, and therefore takes very little effort. It’s already wired in, usually since early childhood, and perpetuated by movies and media to keep us all thinking the same way, yes a culture of bots (thanks to Steve Jobs Pixar Disney at least isn’t a fake  and what a noble heart John Carter Disney’s latest movie has). Even Twitter has become inundated with poseurs and phoney followers in recent weeks, notice that.) The synapses have fired so many times those neural pathways have become fully automated, and usually, most unfortunately unconscious. So it’s accepted as the norm without question.

It takes will power, spirit, to ‘think different’. Fulfillment of the true potential of our pre-established perfect pattern depends on the freedom to do so, it is innate to the well being of humankind. Fear of slipping to bottom of the heap has tended to replace honesty with nicety, and we’ve largely ignored the reconciling of cognitive dissonance, a shift in paradigm. The result of a shift is more enjoyable albeit much more difficult to achieve. It’s on that pain/ pleasure interface where brain and body literally have to develop new connections to accommodate innovative ideas that match pre-established whole cycles of reality rather than narrow mental constructs. And that takes internal work on one’s preconceptions doesn’t it.

There’s certainly a growing body of scientific evidence to support this:

How can we start to think different? It isn’t merely mental cleverness. A small internal shift can have a big external influence, and I’ve found a good place to start is making sure it’s a body fit, like pHx is. It builds the neural pathways for dealing with our illusions, especially in this day and age of conflicting information, so that mind can harmonize thought processes with emotional understanding rooted in the heart.

pHx ™ how’s it different?

It’s how all the pieces of information are put together to work better as a comprehensive unit, that gives the knowledge a useful practical meaning (not simply rote repetition). Anyone with access to scientific knowledge can understand the physiological and anatomical parameters of the human organism. The more accurately more of the components are integrated, the more they get out of exercise, and the more efficacy in keeping us at our peak health potential our entire lives.

This is why although almost any program can be designed to improve strength/ endurance, coordination/ core stability, and flexibility/ agility by conditioning heart, vascular and lung capacity, stretching and developing muscles, and balancing the  neural, lymphatic, and endocrine systems… however not just any any combination of exercises can do so all at once all-in-one in under 10 minutes (while balancing all muscles with core building weight bearing pull ups and body weight press downs before they get a chance to tense up in the morning). And without adrenaline, cardiac, or acid stress, without circulatory, neural, endocrine imbalance, and without disrupting the chemical acid base equilibrium necessary  for integration of immune resilience, mood, and metabolism.

The pH fitness required to reach our full potential in physical, emotional and mental health that comes from a new intensity and depth of electrolyte delivery to all organs, is no longer dependent on time… hours of rest and recovery, or even hours of yoga and qigong. Just like data compression has advanced our communication networks, Meta Living Design has done the hard work (so you don’t have to) with compression of physiologic/ anatomic mechanisms. For example the rapid building up oxygen reserves in deep organs allows for long breath holding immediately before swimming under water (and even longer if also performed first thing in the morning as well). Increasing speed with remarkable ease elicits an entirely new and radical response in all body systems. And not only with respect to exercise that triggers acidifying Type II muscle fibres, but also relative to traditional exercise which engages primarily aerobic slow twitch Type I postural muscle.

Fortunately when the results are axiomatic, they speak for themselves; even before all the ins and outs of the encrypted code can be comprehended. It’s like software programming that gets More Out of Exercise… it’s easily added to your current regimen, in this case as a warm-up cool down, or done as a complete stand alone workout on days you can’t get to the gym. All that’s needed to enjoy the benefits immediately is developing the neural pathways to use it. ( by the way, the learning curve is  about 6 hours plus 20 minutes/day of practice over 3 weeks.) Like all new technology, it’s ‘magic’ isn’t so obvious until you’ve personally tried pHx™.

Complete, Perfect, and Pre-Established

It’s kind of funny really. From the clothes we wear to the roof over our heads, everything is constructed out of the blueprint of nature. Yet our ego seems to view its manipulation with regards to our food as an advancement on Nature; and we miss the enduring quality, abundance, and priceless value of the regular, unaltered and ordinary. What makes pre-established templates complete and perfect? Nature produces the most efficient pattern for each blueprint for sustainability with the whole of our environment, making it possible for cycles to occur seamlessly in complete synchronicity.

In this way the human body depends on the entire scale of planetary evolution – it’s the fruit of the tree. Evolution is a process that follows a pre-established plan with the human body as the final result, the completion of the cycle as a whole. True evolution of a species is always for the case of survival. If the mutation is correct and in the case of evolution it is, the species survives and even thrives.

While the body is the result of evolution of plant and animal species, the mind is the result of social development. In man’s unceasing thought-based evolution focused on manipulation of nature, the result has more often the weakening of species. An imagination that makes as its sole reference, the social constructs from which it develops, without deference to the authority of nature’s pre-established structure cannot, by definition, match reality.

We would take well to realize that when we are tampering perfection, invention that doesn’t fit the whole is disruptive and destructive to the cyclical processes which optimize its potential (DNA cloning and nano manipulation of pre-established molecules, is one example. The lack of sufficient land allotment for humane husbandry of farm animals, is another.). Our mind’s potential is optimized in exact proportion to it’s harmony with the body. Only social constructs which match the pre-established pattern or blueprint of nature, can provide a basis for the mind to be stabilized by the body.

We cannot determine the best action to take with integrity if we don’t understand intuitively, emotionally, and mentally the limits our natural environment can bare (especially at the rate a very small percentage of us have been using up most of the world’s non-renewable resources – having children out of social expectation is one example. Another is the dispute over water between Egypt and Ethiopia’s burgeoning population, yet exploding growth has gone out of control with respect to limits of natural environment, leading to the threat of war over manipulation of the Nile.) We need to consider whether we’re not better served by taking care of our own internal integrity, and developing and implementing green solutions, so that ALL children can fulfill their potential, and not procreate than we can properly take care of.

The degree to which our mind is based on the reality of the perfection and completeness of nature, determines how well we can survive as a species. Unless development of the mind fits pre-established blueprints, history shows even religion has fantastically assumed the mental construct that the Creator goes against creation, and orthodox academic propound justified greed instead of championing reason (building oil wells in fragile environments, etc. ad nauseum). There are, of course, precise scientific laws to cultural unity based on self-responsibility  for perpetuity of the world at its highest level, and at the speed we’re approaching global limits…

Precision that achieves fast kinesthetic balance under conditions of the physiologic pH balance gives the rapid homeostatic equilibrium that  sustains a tenacious link unifying mind, body, and emotions all day long.”
